Roland JD800 vintage synthesizer. works great,needs TLC

One of the greatest synths

This is one of the best sounding synths, if you can find one that is still in good shape. It has many built-in sounds to start from and lots of options to shape the sounds, including effects like reverb and EQ. It is very easy to create sounds since all the controls are visual sliders. The ability to layer up to four sounds on top of each other is also a powerful feature. It does not have a built-in arpeggiator or sequencer, but you can use midi for that. The weakness is the keyboard, which can suffer from the "red glue" problem, wherein the original glue melts and causes problems with the keys. Therefore, it is important to find one with a good keyboard. The other issue is it's very heavy by today's standards, but the sound is worth it.

Slowly degrades over time

The unit has a small footprint and the sound is decent. After about 6 months, it would loose half of the presets, although it would still make you cycle through all 20 of them. After about a year and a half, the buttons started to malfunction. For example, if you press the Power button the light would go on. A power cycle would usually fix that. After about 3 years, it was kaput. Also, it doesn't have AM.
