Essential Listening
2 of 2 found this helpful Genesis were one of the big progressive rock bands on the 1970s. Their early work was full of intricate themes and excellent skills but somehow their albums had a sense on insecurity about them - almost as if they were trying too hard. Their breakthrough album was "Trespass" and this gave them the critical acclaim and following that enabled them to record "Selling England by the Pound".
From the open bars on the first track where an unaccompanied Gabriel questions "Can you tell me where my country lies" to the closing phrases of "Aisle of plenty" the is a confidence and assuredness about all they do. The album has 4 tracks of around 10 minutes each and a smattering of shorter ones so around 50 minutes of music squeezed onto the vinyl.
The overall impression I have is of a band who know they can do it and are producing music which is complex - but not so much that it alienates the common man. "Dancing with the Moonlight Knight", "Firth of Fifth", "Battle of Epping Forest" and "Cinema Show" are easy to listen to and yet develop themes and complexity in a way that traditional rock does not.
To all this add the humour of Gabriel's lyrics. Listen hard and the words have a cutting edge that crowns the music and adds to the experience.
This album is also notable for the first time that Phil Collins takes lead vocals. Maybe that is not such a good thing - but skip that track and enjoy the rest - it may even make you want to hear more from this band!

Prog Roack Materpiece
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was the last Genesis studio album before Peter Gabriel left. In some ways it marks a big departure from what had gone before. Gone were the epic 10 minute tracks that developed themes and told stories - here was something that on face value was a collection of much shorter tracks.
But hang on a minute, Gabriel's cover notes told a story - the background to the music. As you read and listen your realise the two come together - there are no clear breaks between tracks, instead theme follows theme progressing from one track to the next telling the story of John and his counterpoint Rael.
This is not an album to dip into and select individual tracks to listen to - many of them do not stand up too well on their own. Instead, it demands to be listened to in its entirity. Only as one track progresses to the next do you come to understand how they fit into the overall scheme of things.
This is not an understated album. It is perhaps the most defficult Genesis album to appreciate - however, it remains my favourite - quintessentially Genesis, grown up, full of complex riffs and themes, hard to get into but oh so rewarding when you do.
If you have 90 minutes to spare, a good Hifi and excellent headphones this is a great way to spend the time!

Outstanding Portable Compact Speakers for MP3 Players
So I come from "old school" hi-fi - one of the dinosaurs who thinks that to get good sound you need big speakers. However, I needed something really compact that I could take with me wherever I went. I did some research before buying and decided to see these if these babies were as good as the professional reviewers said they were.
Firstly - the price I paid on e-bay was a steal. It seems no-one knows how good these are and everyone was buying i-pod specific gear. That left me as the only bidder (much to my delight).
Secondly - I am impressed by the build quality. At first glance these might look a bit plasticy. However they are well put together and have survived being dropped on a tiled floor. They also have some nice touches - I like the retractable lead that plugs into the headphone socket.
Thirdly - they are practical. Only a little bigger than a paperback novel they are light and easily portable. A "protective" bag is included in the box but this is not made from the toughest material. Most of the time I use the mains adaptor that came with them however, I have also used batteries (4 x AA). I didn't believe the claim that they would last 18 hours but was proved wrong!
Finally - sound quality. I know that small speakers are performing better these days and we can expect to get a good dynamic response from something the size of an egg cup. However, I was genuinely surprised at how loud and how good the sound is from these units. I have an eclectic taste in music and these have handled everything I have put through them with aplomb.
I have shown these to a number of hi-fi fans and they too have been impressed by what they have seen and heard.
So to sum up, these are tough, compact little speakers that produce a great sound. Would I buy they again? MOST DEFINITELY !!!
