The Les Paul is a roar, the SG is a growl. Awesome tone.
1 of 1 found this helpful This was not my first Gibson SG. Over 20 years ago I had an SG special which was a fine guitar but it wasn't with me long, as it was stolen. Tends to happen to everyone who plays at one time or another. So jump forward two decades and the invention of recording software for the personal computer and I realized I could begin recording music again. I have two Les Pauls and they are astounding instruments but I wrote a song that needed a guitar with more growl and less roar. It didn't take long to realize that the SG was what I needed. I kept looking for an SG special due to price considerations but a standard came up in that same price range so I jumped at it. I plugged it in and it was exactly the tone I was looking for. The thing I found most surprising was how fast the neck was. Compared to a strat I was able to play at mach speed on the SG. I think one of the psychological benefits (self-rationalization) is that I purchased the red model like Angus Young so I pick it up believing that I can crush the pentatonic like he does. One point of caution, many MANY of these guitars end up with head and neck repairs. More so even than a Les Paul. If you get up the money to purchase one, have a care with it. It will give you all the crunchy chewy tone you will ever need, so pamper it.
