Entertaining and Informative
Lytton Strachey was a fascinating man of letters: witty, highly intelligent, and non-conformist. His approach to the life of Queen Victoria is a breath of fresh air. He has a conversational style that flows beautifully, breathing life into Victoria and all who were a part of her reign, often with a sense of wry humor. But he's never too flippant or judgmental.
This is not a weighty tome, and it moves along briskly. It's almost as though he was writing with an eye for the readers of today. I found myself looking forward to settling down with this book each night, as much for Strachey's voice as the life and history that unfolded. I came away with a clearer picture of a great lady and important period in world history without feeling that I'd sacrificed a pleasurable reading experience in the process.
This illustrated version is very well edited, with great images. The text accompanying the images expands the details of certain moments and people relating to the life of Queen Victoria.. But even without illustrations, the book would be highly entertaining and informative.

A Gripping Evocation of Pre-WW I England
1 of 1 found this helpful I saw an ad for "Downton Abbey" on P.B.S. and it looked very good, but was very expensive. I was pleased to find it on Ebay for half the price, and upon receiving it, could not stop watching it. Very historically accurate, with the house itself a character in the melodrama of the British aristocracy and the people who served them. The plot and great acting pull you in, and you simply must watch each continuing episode to see what will happen to the characters. If you liked "Gosford Park" or any of the Merchant-Ivory films, you'll enjoy this very much. The last episode will leave you hungry for more.

A Fan's Dream!
If you're a Blossom Dearie fan, this is the ultimate collection of recordings from her prime years. A great value, and the sound quality is fine.
