A reassuring and comforting tale told from the departed pet's point of view
1 of 1 found this helpful I bought this book on a drive from New York to Virginia in (appx.) 1991-1992. I stumbled upon it on a "discount table" in a large chain book-store, which one I cannot recall. I thumbed through it, and from what I could see, I knew I had to have it... and several extra copies for friends who I knew would be losing their pets to the Rainbow Bridge, eventually. I bought every copy on the sale table, and the cost had been dramatically cut to about $2.50. It was worthwhile, as everyone to whom I gifted this book felt comforted in a time of great sadness. Here it is, now - 23 years later - and I found myself in need of the book, as all my pets are aging gracefully towards their time to depart.
This gentle, sensitive, warm, peaceful, well-written book combines bits of Christian and Catholic teachings/beliefs (St. Francis, heaven, etc.) with the philosophy of reincarnation, and the hope we humans have that dogs - and all animals, by extrapolation - have souls, and that real love is infinite and more powerful than death.
I could feel the devotion this "little dog" and his owner - his "Mommie" - shared throughout the book. I even read it to some children once, and although they experienced sadness and a few tears (identifying with the loss of their pet), they also smiled through their tears in triumph at the end.
I won't give any more info as to the plot. Let's just say if you are unopposed to opening yourself up to a happy mix of concepts (described above) and you'd like having a short but meaningful book to read which would help ease the pain of losing your "best friend" when the time comes, then this is absolutely the book for you.
I was overjoyed to find it at a great discounted price when all the other vendor ads I saw had it listed as "rare" and for a very high price. I had to laugh out loud when I saw that the vendor had left on the back of the book not only its original price-tag, but a "sale" price-tag as well... for 99 cents! It brought me right back to that trip to Virginia, my own good luck in finding the book the first time on sale, and the loving memories of all my departed pets who remain with me in spirit to this very day.
Over the years, I had given away all my other copies as I had intended, but I will not part with this one. It will remain a valued part of my personal library until the day I myself leave this green Earth, to meet the souls of my own little friends, who await me at the Rainbow Bridge.
Rosemary Sutcliff -- if you ever get the opportunity to read this review -- thank you for such a precious book. I think you must be a kind and caring person to have written such a creative and reassuring story.

Very informative
This is an excellent book with great info, although we decided to adopt another type of dog.
