Old school, but a good looker and runner.
Though this product was produced in the 1970s, it can be found in very good condition. The motor, while serviceable, is loud and rough running my modern standards. It can easily be replaced with a modern can motor. While the model is attractive, it is slightly too large for the scale. Also, it has old-style "pizza cutter" flanges on the wheels that are not NMRA compatible. It runs fine on code 83 track but will not clear the frog in a code 83 turnout. So, lots of caveats if you want to buy, but it's a well made and very pretty locomotive.

A good place to start
Accessory voltage level setting is quirky, but otherwise this is a terrific transformer for a starter layout.

Great loco, tricky for DCC
This is a fine locomotive. The motor is powerful and quiet, and the mechanism runs smoothly. The body casting is cleanly and nicely decorated. For those intending to install a DCC decoder, beware: There is precious little space inside the body shell, and the selection of 8-pin decoders is limited. The Hornby site has a helpful tutorial on decoder installation, but the directions don't specify the decoder used.
