Morrissey - Maladjusted (CD 1997)
Maladjusted, Morrissey's most maligned album, reached a relatively lowly number 8 in the chart of 1997 and stayed only 3 weeks. The next, 2004's You are the Quarry, is often cited a "return to form". Maladjusted is forever linked with his high court appearances with former Smiths bandmates Joyce and Rourke. Apparently it was almost called Devious, Truculent and Unreliable - words the Judge famously used to described the singer. Maladjusted is a terrific album and only suffers by comparison with the outstanding Quarry and the previous Southpaw Grammar of 1994.
Standout tracks are Roy's Keen (about a window cleaner!) and the beautiful He Cried. Ammunition is also lovely. It finishes with the rousing Satan Rejected my soul. Blistering. Alma Matters was the big single, reaching number 16 in August of 1997.
Ambitious Outsiders may be his most disturbing lyric - despite many listens I struggle to discern a "meaning". Terrorism? Kidnapping? Middle class guilt? If you can untangle it, please post a version on here!
Downside - the artwork is quite nasty - evidence that Morrissey's mind was elsewhere? - but Maladjusted is well worth a listen. The US version contains Sorrow will come in the end, which was written about the legal proceedings. The record label decided to remove it from the UK release as apparently it contains vicious lyrics about his former bandmates!
Kill Uncle and Maladjusted may be among the least loved of Morrissey's solo work, but even at his least compelling, his work still towers over 99% of his contempories. Give it a listen. You will not be disappointed.
