Polythene Perfection.
Excellent bit of kit the likes of which has been around for decades. It's simply made - just one piece of injection-mouded polythene. There's no chome to tarnish, no moving parts to wear out, and as its screwed to a wall or panel (2 screws provided) it's not going to tumble on the floor. What's more, it actually grips the paper roll tightly enough to prevent accidental unrolling, but not too tight to do the job. This is the sort of cheap, straightforward item that we all take for granted without stopping to consider the practical intelligence behind its design. It probably only cost coppers to make yet may well last a lifetime. As the simplest solution is probably the right one - it wins my Occam's Razor Award.

A case too far?
Case Logic's smaller volume cases are excellent quality and I wouldn't hesitate to offer at least 4 stars for them. I've had two for years, and bought a new one more recently. This larger capacity item however, feels a little `under-engineered' for its size. The zip is prone to snag if not treated carefully, the fabric tending to be a tad baggy. I can feel the edge of a plastic spine through the rather inadequate padding at the back which is likely to lead to pressure fraying at some point. On balance, I'd recommend buying two smaller cases and paying the extra. The biggie is still a decent item for the money, but I just don't think it will go for years without a problem like its lesser cousins.

Budget item, but good value.
I was upgrading a small telescope and wanted a finder to match it so that I could do away with aches in my ageing neck. This Seben is a budget item, but is much better value than the price would suggest. It IS mostly plastic and that lends it a rather flimsy feel, however, the bracket is `universal' and fit my 70mm Celestron refractor without modification and is fully adjustable by means of set-screws. Also, the optics are nice and clear, with no discerninble stopping-down of the object-lens. This means that it's a well-made glass and you get the full light-gathering power of its 30mm. The cross-hairs is nice and clear and there is adjustment. My only grumble is that it is supplied without lens covers. Maybe Seben could `look' into that. Very pleased, overall.
