A true taste of hunger
I first read this trio of books when I was about 17. This is the second of the most famous of Walter Macken's trilogy. It follows the story of a family who is thrust into the worst of Ireland's tragedies, the potato famine. The way Walter Macken describes the landscapes and the situations make you feel you are actually there. You can smell the potatoes rotting in the fields as you turn each page and are swept up in the fear and anxiety of a family struggling to survive in dire circumstances. It is an amazing way to acquaint yourself with one of Ireland's worst eras and it leaves you feeling that it must have been a miracle that anyone survived. With his vivid story telling he is also a weaver of a marvellous tapestry of history which unfolds before your eyes. Once you have read the trilogy you will no doubt seek out Walter Macken's other works which are equally enthralling. He is my favourite author.
