Genesis - Genesis - 1970-1975 (1970-1975/+6DVD) [SACD]
I have been listening to Genesis as long as I can remember, their early music with Peter Gabriel being my favourite period. Up until the 90s I had listened to all their music on vinyl via high quality turntable, amp and speakers, before taking the plunge with digital replay via CD, again with high quality components. Even though vinyl easily trumps CD for sound quality, I always felt the production with both formats to be veiled and compressed, especially with percussion. Then I bought this little lot on SACD. Simply stunning. We are not talking subtle difference here, we are talking massive. Obviously the original masters always had the information, we simply never heard that information until now. At last we can hear what Genesis REALLY sound like. The seperation of instruments, the depth of soundstage, the breathtaking dynamics and swings - it really is astonishing what they have achieved with this SACD release. If you have a system capable of SACD replay, I urge you to listen to this as soon as possible. If you happen to be a serious Genesis fan and don't have an SACD player - then get one! You simply haven't heard Genesis till you hear them on SACD. My particular favourite album has always been The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway with its crazy concept and mesmerizing song structure - Gabriel at his best for sure, but you really have to hear the drums and bass. On SACD they finally assume their correct position of underpinning everything, the snap of snare, the beginning, middle and end of each bass note - I just hadn't heard them before! If you are used to listening to CD on a system worth, say, £3000, then listening to this lot on a suitable SACD player elevates the sound quality of your system to at the very least double that mark - SACD really is that good. I cannot recommend this SACD set highly enough to Genesis fans - buy, sit back and enjoy.
