    The best horror soap ever
Many people in the UK have not heard of Dark Shadows-which is a pity, because it is an astounding show. The original ran from the 1960s through to the 70s, from creaky sets that wobbled and live performances with actors forgetting their lines through to colour and more polished production values. It started as a Gothic romance, then introduced vampires, werewolves, ghosts and even a staircase that enabled people to travel back and forth in time. For every aspect that would make you cringe, there was always something that would take you by surprise and want to laugh with pleasure. The box sets are well done considering the age of the material, and you sometimes get a free dark shadows postcard as well. Though there was revival series made, and there are rumours of a new series planned-its the original that has the magic! For more details google Dark Shadows and you will find tons of information. A couple of warnings - the show starts slow and creeps up on you until you are completely addicted. Fuelling the addiction is not easy though. Copies are hard to find in the UK-you normally end up getting them from the USA or Canada, and that can result in paying VAT and import duties of around £11 in addition to whatever you pay for the DVD. Current regulations mean that anything under £18 does not attract VAT/duties, but these nearly always sell for more than that. Some thoughtful dealers may state the value when posting as lower, but if they get the value off by even a few pence you still get hit by the charges.
