The book we should have at the beginning of our cooking lives
I absolutely love this book. Given all that Marcella taught us about cooking Italian, and in general, she narrows it down to the ingredients, helping us to understand their fibrous, gelatinous, herbaceous lives - how to read them, to feel them, and to know what we can do with them. In retrospect, this is the book we should read before all else. It's a classic! And, not to mention the quality, the beauty of the writing, her husband Victor's hand in hers, a loving classic. Go buy this book, right now, right away!

An "Aframerican" Classical Musician
This is among the few works on the "Aframerican" (to use Hayes own term) rise of classical musicians, an intimate biography. How'd we go so long without it? It's also worthwhile to seek the Smitsonian's CD of Mr. Hayes singing, which, though recorded late in life gives a window into what must have been a fabulous voice and career.
