7PCE SILVERLINE TWEEZER SET - PRECISE MODELLING JEWELLERY BEADING FINE WIRE WORK
    21 Aug, 2019
Cheap & cheerful but "does what it says on the tin"
Brilliant price. Quality not the best - some of the internal edges are rough. Would be much better if there were one or two pairs with soft faced tips so that hard slippery objects could be picked up securely but, hey, at the price paid (under £4 for 7 tools inc P&P) it's really hard to be critical.
Netgear ReadyNAS 424 4-Bay External NAS Enclosure

Great network storage at a reasonable price
Firstly let me explain that I am not using the full potential of this product - I'm just using it as network file store. The device is easy to set up physically and once you have it powered up & connected to a network, there are lots of options for using it as a file store. I loaded mine with 4 x 8TB Seagate Ironwolf drives and the box automatically configured these as one 21.6TB volume with RAID-5 redundancy. (It takes a few hours to build the file system, so a little patience is called for!) When powered up the fan starts at full speed and is quite loud, but it soon settles down to a barely audible hum even when the fan speed is set to "cool". (The Ironwolf drives are not the quietest and dwarf the sound from the enclosure). Before trusting it with important data I simulated a disk failure by pulling out one of the disks: as expected it reported that it was running in "degraded mode" but remained fully accessible. After reinserting the disk it took several hours to resync (again fully accessible whilst this was happening) & everything was fine again once this had finished. The unit replaced a Netgear ReadyNAS 214 and is noticeably faster. Otherwise the operating system is identical though the 424 has more performance monitoring - and only one USB 3 port on the rear instead of 2 as in the 214, but, hey, it has an eSATA port instead of the second USB port. The only thing I don't like in comparison is that with the 424 it is neccessary to open the door to see the disk status lights, but this is a very minor issue.
REVELL Gift Set Apollo 11 Saturn V Rocket 1:96 Space Model Kit 03704

A lot of rocket for the money
This is certainly an impressive kit & looks good at a glance, but there are a number of issues a buyer should be aware of. 1) The paints included are far from sufficient in terms of range or quantity, and one of them isn't even relevant to the finished model. 2) The paint scheme in the documentation is for AS-501 (Apollo 4) not AS-506 (Apollo 11) 3) There are many details which are inaccurate, of which the most serious are the lack of batting on the first stage engines, the second stage thrust structure and the Apollo spacecraft which is a Block 1 type (again consistent with AS-501) which never flew manned - all the manned Apollo missions used the Block 2 spacecraft. The modelling of the spacecraft launch assembly ("LEM garage") is also unsatisfactory. I'm being picky here & aftermarket products are available to fix these issues, though purchasing these will almost double the cost. I do like the fact that the box it comes doubles as a storage/transport case for the finished model, and It's certainly a far better model than Revell's 1:144 version of the Saturn V. The Airfix 1:144 version also has some issues (though the current versions do at least have a realistic SLA and a Block II spacecraft) but is better value for money. *In my opinion*. As for the kit itself: This is NOT a kid's toy and won't be built in 2 hours flat! The moulds used for the CSM & LEM (common to the 1:96 Columbia & Eagle model) appear to be quite worn & the parts need quite a lot of work to make a neat model. The construction of the tankage sections of the rocket is unusual & needs great care to get right. And there are a lot of fiddly parts far smaller than you'd expect for a 4 foot high model (especially in the lunar module - which, by the way, does not have moveable landing legs & so must be built in the "folded" configuration if you want to stow it in the rocket).
