Tacky, But Fun to Watch
Alien Nation has a bit more to it than it appears. The makers of this movie were very creative when it came to costume and makeup design for the aliens, their social habits, and their eating preferences (Unlike in old alien movies, in which you just take a man, paint him blue, and add antennae). As time goes on, you learn more about the aliens and the oppression they'd previously suffered... and yet this is presented in a way that makes the viewer sympathetic, but it's not overwhelming and doesn't make you feel defeated or depressed. There is some very good humor in it (Similar to the Lethal Weapon movies), fun action scenes, and characters that are stereotypical (Such as "tough-opinionated-cop") and some that are believable and easy to relate to. While it seems to be primarily an action movie, it shows the gradual process within a human being of overcoming prejudice and seeing the value and strength others - however different - possess. This is a great movie for a stay-at-home Sunday with delivered pizza.

Sweet and Endearing
This was one of a series of Hume Cronyn/Jessica Tandy movies. It is not their best, but they do succeed in demonstrating their remarkable acting abilities. While not like "Cocoon," it is still exceptional... because of the actors, who all do a magnificent job. This movie was made in a time when Hollywood's "Small, Cute Creatures Mode" was beginning to wane. Previously, there'd been movies like "Gremlins" and "Critters." The story line is very well done. The arrival of the tiny visitors from outer space begins to change the lives of good people who have lost hope. There is sorrow, fear, hope and joy in this movie. There are good guys and bad guys, all artfully portrayed by the various actors. The actors are convincing; there is not one dud actor in the bunch. The special effects are very good for the time period. The tale is heartening, and uplifting. It is cute and sentimental. Anyone who likes a story of decent individuals triumphing over adversity will enjoy it.

Absolutely Hilarious
This is one dark comedy that never quite received the recognition it deserves. Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn do a wonderful job of portraying greedy, vain, and vicious women who will stop at nothing to retain their youth and beauty. Their performances are absolutely side-splitting. It is not Bruce Willis' best movie, but it does show a departure from the usual shoot-'em-ups he is so well known for. He *does* manage to carry off portraying a milquetoast plastic surgeon. However, the movie is not about him; he is just a bone that the two rabid women are snarling so comically over. The story line is very well done. We see the beginnings of a competition between two women that evolves into a boisterous madness. The interaction is simple, and yet carries an undercurrent of complexity that makes it absolutely delightful. The special effects used to show the competing shrews conditions are well done and priceless. You may never look at a can of spray paint the same way again! It is inventive and fiendish. If it doesn't make one laugh, then one is probably... dead.
