Quality bike that is satisfying to ride
2 of 2 found this helpful The Trek 7.7 has a good reputation among professional cyclists anyway, being a brand recognised for quality.
My purchase being second hand passed inspection, but needed servicing. This cost about £100 as some replacement parts were needed, like bottom bracket spindle, inner tubes and then a good general re-grease of bearings etc.
The frame is aluminium and the forks carbon fibre. The 20" inch frame fits me perfectly at 5ft 11inches. It is important to get the seat height set right to maintain comfort and posture.
This is a hybrid, so flat bars rather than drop. As the bike is meant to compromise as a commuter and more serious riding say on weekends, or touring, the tyres are slightly wider than the racing bike, that resemble razor blades!
The tyres I have a puncture proofed treadles skin. The grip is superb, but when on the straight or going down hill the ride is effortless. Chunky mountain bike tread is tedious by comparison on the road. I would not take this bike off road except on a smooth possibly purpose built track like the Tissington trail, a converted old railway line. Even then in the dry. Muddy canal tow paths would not be handled well on this bike with smooth tyres.
I enjoy riding this bike, really lightweight, good build, and with a three ring chain-wheel and nine gears on the back wheel you have 27 gearing options to help you cope with all the challenges the roads can throw at you.
Bear in mind that avoiding pot holes is essential, as the wheels could be easily damaged by a pot hole your mountain bike would shrug off. They are not meant for rough riding.
The paint finish is excellent, and although my bike is second hand, and had a few scuffs, most polished out quite easily. Mine is finished in a satin finish bronze colour, which I think is classy. You will see many in gleaming white, but I think shows any dirt quickly, but that's just my choice. The white frames look cool. The shimano gear stock fitted are not the top range, but are good quality. That comment just means your getting good quality for the price, and what the bike is designed for. If you want a professional road race bike expect to pay over £1000 new.
My bike price range is around £500 to £800 depending on where you go for it.
I paid about £250 second hand, so feel I got a bargain. Make sure you check it out thoroughly before you buy, as although the Trek 7.7 is a quality bike, you can't be sure if it has been abused without giving it a good inspection.
