A great read and a wonderful piece of social history spanning a century
Have read this book and remarkable sums from the title sums up the story. It gets down to brass tacks in its' account of how the company began and thrived very quickly to become the first Boot company to reach National retail status. It wasn't the largest boot company or the smallest but was very ingenious in the ideas they promoted. They sold barrels and stacks of boots at wholesale prices and 'stole a march' on their competitors

Generally a taboo subject but he has handled it well giving the book-merit
Humorous look at the earthy subject of privies, Dunnies and to give it its posh title- excretia. Markham describes in detail and with imagery the "outside" loo, even down to using "bum f" in Yorkshire.
