A Noir Classic
Splendid direction - and acting! - by Orson Welles in the central role, as well as terrific acting by Akim Tamiroff, Joseph Callieia, and others - including a brief but crucial role by Marlene Dietrich. Superb cinematography, and this Blu-Ray copy includes as an extra feature scene-by-scene commentary on the "theatrical version" released in 1958. Welles was disappointed that the studio re-cut that 1958 version, and sent the studio a 58-page critique, which they mostly ignored. But this Blu-Ray copy also includes a 1998 "reconstructed version" that attempts to present the movie as Welles intended it (of course some scenes were no longer extant, unfortunately), and it is fascinating to watch both and compare them.
