A Mendelssohn Octet for the Ages.
This is arguably the greatest recording of the Mendelssohn Octet ever made, played by the two greatest quartets of post-WWII Czechoslovakia. The coupling is equally fine, but the volcanic energy of the Octet--especially at beginning of the first movement's recapitulation--is unforgettable, and the rest of the work is played at the same level. The Trio is a worthy companion to this fabulous performance of the Octet.

I am using this as a CD/SACD player, so image quality is not a factor in my evaluation.
