Awesome but expensive
Very nice for kids since it is manually operated. Very well made and looks great in a layout even if not used with a Thomas train set. It is very expensive, but a few reasonable prices can be found on eBay if you are patient. Four stars rather than five because of price.

Runs great for a 50 year old engine
Excellent product for a 50 year old toy...horn was not working, but easily repaired. These old Lionel 2242 engines are very durable and reliable and require very little maintenance other than light lubrication. Even with it's single engine, this one easily pulls a dummy B unit, a dummy A unit plus six passenger cars without slipping or stalling. I even like the old chipped original paint, which underscores the engine's age. I can remember, as a four year old, going to the train station with my parents to pick up my grandmother and seeing the Santa Fe in it's War Bonnet paint scheme- brings back lots of memories!
