A fascinating study of characters in texts.
This won't be up everyone's street but to a former literature and linguistics student like me this in-depth study of the additional marks (or some of them) that accompany the words in our texts, usually used without a thought, is compelling and -- believe it or not -- a page-turner. The analysis is so thorough that almost a third of the book at its end is devoted to Notes. The scholarship in evidence is most impressive. To me, it calls out for a 'Shady Characters 2' to cover the marks in texts not covered here, such as the exclamation mark and the many diacritics.

Not just a book for young black women.
This book is an excellent one, not as academic as it might at first appear. The main body of the book is composed of studies in their own words of successful black women in Britain today, how they got to where they are and about the personal and general kinds of discrimination which they have had to overcome. I am a white male in his sixties and was asked to read it by a young black woman and I am very glad to have done so. However, not just someone of my age but young males -- white and black -- should be made aware of how being a woman and black make success more difficult but now achievable for young black women, and how they are now achieving such success, thanks to or in rebellion from their forebears. There is plenty of humour in the accounts of these women, though sometimes of the 'if you didn't laugh you'd cry' sort. I am not fond of the title or the colour of the book cover but these are the only petty things I can find to adversely criticise! Should be given to all young people, black or white, in secondary school or sixth form college, in my opinion.

An excellent radio with the ability to pause.
With its 27 minute pause capability, it is possible to hear the whole of most radio shows if one is interrupted whilst listening to this radio.
Everything is easy to use and feels solidly made.
The sound is beautifully clear and there are bass and treble adjusters which enable one to make the sound exactly as one prefers it to be.
