An historical and emotional insight into the fall of Sigapore
The third of Farrell's 'Empire' series, which takes the same theme as the previous two, the decline of imperialism. Set in the time period before the fall of Singapore in World War Two, the story is told through the eyes of various citizens and military figures, enabling a variety of perspectives to be taken. The Major, Brendan Archer, the central character of Farrell's 'Troubles' reappears. Farrell's wonderful ability as a storyteller shines through again..a very gripping book full of perceptive insights into human behaviour. Farrell is a fabulous author; this book is best read, I think, as the third his Empire series..ie read Troubles and the Siege of Krishnapur first.

Good basic exercise machine
This is the third of these I have owned(2 others worn out after many years!). They are a very good way of keeping fit with a short daily 15 minute workout, or,of course, longer if you wish. Although it only has a backwards and forwards motion, you can vary the exercise you do considerably by using arms, leaning forward or back, or standing backwards on the pedals. Simple counter mechanism gives you some idea of what you have done. I put it in front of the TV and watch and exercise, since it is virtually silent

Laying tiles to treasure
This is a well designed tile laying game, in which explorers seek to gain the maximum treasure from an island exploration. All components are very attractive and well made. A great strength of the game is that it is very easy to learn and teach, and the game trails differ each time to give it variety. Tile laying is broadly Carcassonne like, except that some matches do not need to be exact. Can be won using a wide variety of strategies; we have found it is all too easy to ignore what your opponent(s) is doing, which causes you problems. Only downside for us, and we have already played many times, is that set up time is a bit long and fiddly, since at least one payer has to lay out their 36 tiles in order. Good value for money and recommended.
