Merle the High Flying Squirrel (ExLib) by Peet, Bill

Entertaining
Imaginative story by Bill Peet. The main character, Merle the squirrel, plans to travel to see the Giant Redwood trees that he heard a man talking about in the city park. Little does Merle know about distances and if he can give there by following telephone lines (which he was told travel "everywhere"), but he tries. This turns into one great adventure for the squirrel that was skittish and nervous in the noisy, bustling city at the beginning of the story. Wonderful children's story with a bit of a lesson.

Story with a purpose
My daughter and I have enjoyed Cyrus, the Unsinkable Sea Serpent by Bill Peet. Cyrus, the main character, is encouraged by a shark to wreck a ship and eat the passengers even though he has never done that before. After an incident, Cyrus changes his mind and helps the passengers of a ship on a long voyage. Cyrus is willing to share some of his time and talent with others, specifically, some people in need. The pictures are colorful and creative. One of the pictures shows Cyrus with a horrified look on his face, which was very appropriate for the text on that page.
A few of the pictures have Cyrus "swimming" on the surface of the water, which, to me, look cheesy. Overall, a good story with a great theme.

Positive, lighthearted story
Enjoyable story about a brother in a religious order who loses his library book because of a bear. The story seems to be set in the Middle Ages so there is a historical aspect to the story, as well as, a religious (Christian) perspective. The story is not preachy; I thought it has a humorous ending. Friendship is an important element to the story. My daughter and I enjoyed it.
