a step up from the original non-IS version
It's a low cost, fairly wide angle lens with image stabilization. Feels nicer than the original non-IS version of the lens. Image results are comparable to the original which was really good for such a low cost lens. I loaned out my original for the summer and found myself in the Rocky Mountains needing something a bit wider than my 24-105L. The 18-55IS got me a little wider and weighs considerably less and that worked out well for a guy who lives at sea level and wanted to hike to 10k feet to take some vacation images. This lens is $100 well spent!
