Defective item. Doesn't work. Bad design.
Defective item. Doesn't work (nil operation). Bad battery compartment design prevents the battery from making contact and prevents the battery compartment lid from closing.
Same for both items that I ordered so the problem does not appear to be just random poor manufacturing quality. The whole batch is probably like this.
