The Vital Spark
This DVD contains the only surviving episodes of the BBC TV series about the Vital Spark Clyde Puffer, Parahandy and Sunny Jim and McPhail the engineer. Viewing it so many years after the programmes were first broadcast, it seems a quaint reminder of the innocent and gentle humour that typified British television of that era. The stories are loosely based on the characters immortalised by Neil Munro in his newspaper stories published at the beginning of the last century. If you have read the book published by Birlinn in 1992 and reprinted several times since, you will enjoy the DVD. The book is highly recommended since it contains the complete series of short stories and includes 19 previously unpublished tales. (ISBN 1-84158-227-1) The DVD is recommended as much for its basic and often quaint humour as for its historical importance. It gives the viewer a small insight into life on a Clyde Puffer, of which sadly few remain.
