no jazz, no swing
interesting that this movie was titled 'king of jazz', when in my opinion there was NO JAZZ in it! at least what i think of as jazz. i think of benny goodman, artie shaw, glenn miller, harry james as jazz. you know, the big bands swing! there was NONE OF THIS here! i don't know what you'd call the music in this movie, but i wouldn't call it jazz or swing, even though whiteman had indeed a big band, it was disappointing to me since i am a great fan of swing jazz and the above mentioned artists. i suppose this movie had some good points. some of the dancing was alright, and it was culturally interesting pertaining to the era it was from. would i buy it now knowing what it really was with none of what i call swing/jazz? no i wouldn't.

slow ballads, mostly!
only a couple of big band songs on this, one of which i already had! the rest were love ballads, not the upbeat quality of the big bands! no, not necessarily bad, depending on what you like! i wanted big band bounce and received night club ballads! just not my style!
