College Engineers Opinion fo Research Material
I work at a college close to where the majority of Spitfires were built. I am working on a project to build detailed scaled engineering models of the spitfire so along with plans it has been necessary to obtain a number of books with annotated photographic references to help understand how the spit is put together and maintained. I along with the Red Haynes manual on the Spit, this book has been a real benefit and you really get to appreciate the amount of effort that goes into restoration and maintenance work from the people in the know.
The realisation that what was mass produced almost with an expected short shelf life with sometimes inferior metals being used at the time, without consideration of how the future would see these now sought after aircraft and how regulations and the detailed inspections ensure she still flies today.
From a design engineers point of view I have found both Haynes invaluable at seeing internal components of the spit from vantage points you wouldn’t normally get to see. There were images you couldn’t even find on google which when annotated have been a big help. Along with two other prized books “Spitfire in my Workshop” and the brilliant “Monforten Press Spitfire Engineered” I would say they are a must for any enthusiasts like myself.
