Don Everly On His Own - Branching Out
I had heard a few of the songs from this CD on You Tube and I frankly wasn’t that enamored with them. However, I wanted to have the CD in my own collection because I already had Don’s “Brother Jukebox” CD and I loved it. It made all the difference to really sit down and listen (with headphones) to “Don Everly”/“Sunset Towers”. I came away really liking a lot of the songs on both albums. If you’re looking for the Everly Brothers on these albums, you won’t find them. This is Don on his own with some fine back-up musicians doing some of his own compositions. Some of it is a bit raw, some of it is brilliant, but all of it is undeniably a very individual and talented Don Everly.

Clifton Webb in one of his best roles
I have wanted to add “Stars And Stripes Forever” to my collection for a long time. I enjoy history and biopics and this movie rolls that all into one along with a generous offering of patriotic music by the great composer John Philip Sousa. Rounding out the cast are Debra Paget, Robert Wagner, and Ruth Hussey. I don’t know why this one isn’t featured more often on TCM especially on patriotic holidays. It’s a winner.
