Definitive version
I still have a few minor quibbles about this cut of the film (Angelina Jolie's Russian accent; Colin Farrel's hair really *did* look ridiculous in some scenes, etc...), but the script is actually enjoyable, the arrangement and editing are perfect for the story, and at just over three hours, you have the time to actually take in and appreciate the Old Epic sets and costuming. How this compares to the historical Alexander is far more faithful than comparable historical epics, like _Cleopatria_ or _Spartacus_, which is actually a plus, when you consider that's what Oliver Stone set out to do with this film -- create one of the fantastic historical epics that he enjoyed in his youth. I may never completely forgive him for _The Doors_, but Stone's final cut of _Alexander_ is one of the more engaging epic films in the old style, complete with Intermission.

If you love TOO-RYE-AY by Dexys Midnight Runners...
The Blue Ox Babes began life as disgruntled ex-members of Dexys Midnight Runners. Kevin "Al" Archer left the band over some reason that even I as a hardcore DMR fan can't recall beyond "serious personality clash with Kevin Rowland". BOB pretty much invented the "Celtic soul" sound that became briefly and wildly popular with DMR's album TOO-RYE-AY, and this is not only a well-known "open secret" amongst DMR followers, but is evidenced by the fact that Helen O'Hara, Rowland's violinist and an integral part of this sound, was briefly recruited by Archer before coaxed into the DMR line-up by Rowland, who had re-written much of his material to accommodate strings. Some of this album was previously released as singles, and other bits leaked out as a "bootleg" version of the album after its projected release date for 1988. The release never happened, and many fans assumed the album "lost", destined to only be evidenced in worn-out boots from collector's circles. Cherry Red records has done a beautiful job of cleaning up the old masters and arranging and repackaging this jewel of an album for fans old and new.

A beautiful little book filled with photos and diary entries about Derek Jarman's famous English garden.
