North Face - Great film but better on the big screen
The film is set in europe before the 2nd world war. Two german climbers attempt to climb the north face of the eiger for the first time ever. I saw this film at the cinema before watching on dvd and I have to say the mountain shots are better on the big screen. That said it is still a well acted film and should keep you glued to the screen. There is a love interest for one of the climbers and the background of nazi germany so you should enjoy if you don't watch purely for the mountain shots. Note that the film is in german with subtitles but this didn't spoil my enjoyment.

Enjoyable if predictable story with few scary moments
I had seen Central Station and the Motorcycle diaries by the same guy who directs this film and enjoyed them so thought I would give this a try. There are stellar performances by Jennifer Connelly, Tim Roth and Pete Postelwaite. The story tells the tale of a woman, recently separated from her husband who moves into a rundown block of flats with her daughter. She suffers flashbacks of her mother who neglected her and dirty water leaks into their apartment from the flat above making her feel they have made the wrong choice in moving there. The daughter however seems to like the place and has an imaginary friend. There is a subplot of the acrimonious custody battle between the 2 parents and the caretaker Pete Postelwaite acts a mite strangely. This film does not rely on special effects for the few scary moments and though it's enjoyable enough the story is very predictable. The stellar cast make the film very watchable but they don't quite make up for the script. I believe this was a remake of a Japanese horror film and although the film was good it doesn't make me want to watch the original.
