A beautiful film classic in the definitive unretouched full-frame presentation!
The UK DVD edition is great because it is a full-frame presentation without the CGI figures that were added for the US edition to meet MPAA. I therefore consider this the definitive edition, even compared to more recent Blu-Ray editions which are cropped for 16:9 HDTV. The transfer is good and retains the gritty feel of the 35mm negatives that were pushed two stops to achieve a specific look, again different from the Blu-Ray editions that look a little too cleaned-up for my taste. So glad to find this!
Clearly, this is a film I care a lot about. I think it is masterful, a truly dreamlike experience full of detail and meaning that bear repeated viewing, like a favorite novel well-loved. In particular, it is a great look into Kubrick's take on NYC society at the end of the 20th century, into its decadence and decay, and simultaneously a commentary on commercial film audiences and how their expectations affect their reading of the picture. Viewing the film with this in mind brings added appreciation and richness, but it stands well on its own, with several memorable moments and characters that are arguably more compelling and interesting than the lead role itself. A bit of a deliberate pace, but a great ride. Enjoy!
