Dear John. the Original UK version which the americans remade- STILL FUNNY
3 of 3 found this helpful Great to see this classic TV series again, surprised its taken this long to appear on DVD though!
Its aged quite well, as the fast majority of the series has very few, if any, outside scenes which show how old a series can be with its old cars and clothing styles etc.
Dear John, is set around the 1-2-1 club for those who are divorced and separated, and was written by John sullivan who did Only fools and horses, so its going to be good.
Like fawlty towers it only ran for 2 series, for some reason it faded into obscurity afterwards, rarely if at all been shown on TV since, unlike fools and Fawlty.
Nonetheless, still very watchable today. The 1st series is the stronger one, introducing the characters, the 2nd series concentrating more on john outside of the club and in his bedsit.
Seeing Rachel Bell (went on to be in Grange Hill) again in this role, I didnt realise how attractive she was back then, but then she was only in her late 30s. Ralph Bates (of hammer horrors) was mid 40s so if you yourself are middle-aged now, youll definatley find it funny! Bates died a few years later after the show ended in his early 50s.
The Americans also bought the show and as usual remade it! but it ran for about 6 series and for some bizarre reason the BBC then went and bought it and showed it here! why they never just made more of the original series I dont know. (Im sure the US version was on BBC and not ITV but i may be wrong)
As regards to the DVD set, its 4 discs ( approx 4 episodes per disc series 1 on two discs, series2 on the other 2) Shame the cover art is the same per series, I would have done a differnt colour or image for each of the series, you have to LOOK for the word disc 1 or disc 2 whereas something visually different would be far better to tell them apart.
No extras worth looking at, just a few snippet infos on films some of the cast have been in, repeated on the other discs!!
The 4 discs come in two standard cases, NOT slimline ones, I changed ALL my cases to slimline ones from ebay, and now my collection takes up a very small section of my book cases.
Worth watching if youve not seen it before and certainly worth it if you remember any of the characters or phrases ;were there any sexual problems? being one of the funniest, and Ralph Dring (who was Kevin Dunstable in please sir) for me steals the show everytime hes on....

Despite other reviews these DO fit UK cables.
These were better than expected. 1.5 size fits over UK T&E and RCBO fly leads, they do have an element of stretch. I bought these during the pandemic so took longer to arrive , but they did arrive and I'm pleased with my purchase.

Excellent monitor which has a built insc...
Excellent monitor which has a built inscreen. Can confirm it Detects PVC ectopics, and shows up my 1st degree heart block pattern. At least i can now keep an eye on my heart. You need to be still and resting for it to work without baseline drift, any movement causes artefact, and exercise will not show the rhythm or rate. Does 30sec 60secs and 5 min tracing. N.B the 5 minute trace can only be used with the chest leads supplied.
