Epson Expression Photo XP-55 Inkjet Printer: CD/DVD Printing, Wi-Fi, AirPrint
    24 Feb, 2021
Good photos, but build quality concerns for heavier use.
    (i) Setup. It's not the easiest to setup, (previous Epson printers have been plug in, run the setup program, you're ready to go). You'll need a cable which can reach from the printer to the first computer you're try to connect it with - luckily I had the one from the previous printer. You also need wi-fi (and its password) so the setup can inform the printer how to connect. Subsequent computers' setup don't need the cable as they can find the printer via the wi-fi. The setup seems to leave various things such as "Easy Print"; I'm used to desktop icons but not additional lines in File Explorer: I found this irritating. (Wi-Fi: I suspect there is an option to communicate with the printer if you don't use Wi-Fi. As my laptop only allows one open channel this wasn't an option for me.) (ii) Print quality The printer does well here. The prints seemed comparable to my previous printer. Printing simple documents seemed very quick - it is useful to have a quieter mode and an A4 paper tray. A4 photo paper goes in the top feed. I'm not so sure what happens if you try 6x4. (iii) Build quality I am not impressed as the various trays seem very plastic. I sense they need be handled with care. (iv) Features The two features to mention are if you only printed one document, after about 15 minutes the printer wakes up again and recharges. The other is the printer eventually turns itself off. So say at lunchtime you wanted to print, you now need to go over to the printer and turn it on again. (I used to leave my previous printers on continually and they had the logic to recharge if it was a while since the last print.) (v) Summary Probably best for occasional use as it can deliver good photos. I don't feel the build quality is sufficient for professional or heavy use. My previous Epson lasted 14 years, sadly I'm not so hopeful with this one.
