Jiu-jitsu University by Kevin Howell (Paperback, 2008)

Rather comprehensive didactic textbook with a wealth of clever colour photographs.
Five stars - for a book on Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Please note I am a white belt beginner with only a couple of years of experience in judo as a teenager. I favour learning in books over the internet and videos, hence my quest for such an educational, technical book. I should probably have rated it 4 stars overall, but compared with most didactic books or books which present themselves as such in this particuliar field, this one: - has very little narcissistic content about the personal journey or midset of the author(s) - in my view that is a huge asset; nor does it contain much pseudo-philosophical mumbo-jumbo; - is relatively structured in a rational manner, displaying pedagogic intent (although the editing is far from perfect, and an index wouldn't have been superfluous); - contains abundant photos rather cleverly taken (different angles of the same time/movement, opponents dressed in gis of contrasting colours etc). - is, as far as I can tell at my level (beginner), quite thorough. It is expansive but at least I felt I was getting decent value for money when buying it second-hand. I broke down the book in series of chapters so that I can carry the around and read when commuting.
