    2000 Ducati M750 Dark
This bike was originally purchased to be my "daily rider", and also as a second "family bike" so that my wife and I could ride together whenever the sun was out. This bike's engine is only half the size of my Harley Fatboy so I knew it would get great gas mileage, be light enough for my wife to safely maneuver, and be just a nice bike to leisurely jaunt about town with. After having ridden on it for a few minutes, I realized that this thing is a not as innocent as I thought. The Ducati Monster is nothing short of raw crotch-rocket unadulterated fun! Sure, it may not have the movie star good looks of it's Biposto siblings, or the grace and pinache of a BMW 1100, or the street swagger of a Harley, but anyone who's in the market for a Monster probably doesn't care about the superfluous bling of chrome or the pretentiousness of upright rider ergonomics. All we know is that if Dr. Frankenstein were a biker, this would be his ride. Just looking at this bike reminds me of when I used to sit in biology lab and cut open frogs. There are no shiny plasticky skins to hide it's innerds, but rather it's just a naked heap of twisted metal with it's guts falling out. What's better, is that it makes no apologies for it's appearance. What you see is what you get. It truly is what it's namesake suggests; a Monster. My bike is the M750 Dark edition, with blacked out gloss frame and wheels fitted with a flat black tank as dark as midnight.... and my wife and I LOVE it. This particular bike does have its quirks as most Italian manufactured vehicles are known for. It does have a small leak near it's transmission case. I'm not sure if this is a problem inherent to all Monsters or just mine, but it is evident in the reservoir window that this leak has been there for a little while since the oil level has drained past the lower fill mark. Also, the bike needed some coaxing in order to fire up. I suspect that the bike is equipped with the original battery since spending a night on the trickle charger shocked it back to life. With this in mind, I only gave this bike an "Average" in terms of reliability. So I'm a 6'0" tall, 185 lbs. guy with orangutan arms and a stringy little neck. My only complaints with riding this bike is that my knees are bent so much that I can almost stuff my heels in my back pockets. After 20 miles or so, my quads need a good stretch. So an "Average" score for comfort is what I awarded it. For only having 750 cc's though, this thing is a BEAST! It propels me to highway speed with the twist of the wrist and a jerk of the head, and with it's big Brembo brakes, it can hastily push my torso forward onto the gas tank before I can even press my lips into a grimace. Shifting is a little cumbersome and not as smooth as I would like , since the faster I can run through the gears, the faster I can get the rear rubber to melt on the asphalt. So performance is "Good", but if the tranny were easier to negotiate, this thing's performance review would certainly have been excellent. The build quality and craftsmanship is "Good." Aside from some cheap materials, and fit and finish details, I am certainly a huge fan of it's raw styling. A tachometer would have been very helpful..... as well as a Gucci inspired neck brace. Yes, I do love the Ducati Monster; quirks and all. For the money though, this bike may be a Monster, but it certainly makes the competition look downright frightening.
