For lovers of Velasquez' art; the tangled history of a portrait
The mystery and conflicting evidence regarding the provenance of a portrait; the disagreement regarding the subject of the portrait and the insight into Velasquez' life and the life of the Spanish court are fascinating. It is the compelling tale of a Reading (UK) based bookseller who bought a painting at auction which he was convinced was a lost Velasquez depicting the young Charles I, reputedly painted when he visited the Spanish court to discuss marriage with the Infanta. The subsequent events in the life of Mr Snare, the bookseller, the seizure of his painting and the loss of his reputation and bankruptcy leading to a lively court case make the account as absorbing as a detective story. At times I felt that the author's obvious love of Velasquez and rather flowery description of painting techniques intruded but, overalll, it is a very good read.
