Humax have produced a great Freeview Play box - still a little way to go
6 of 6 found this helpful I got this FVP-4000T from the Currys factory shop and paid 70% of the retail price. So the value is based on that, i.e. I wouldn't have paid the full retail price for this product but would have gone for the cheaper 500Gb model instead.
I had read all the poor reviews in the last year criticising the EPG and on-screen displays. Humax released an upgrade in July that fixed most of these concerns and I made sure that this box had the latest software - that's a must.
The product is easy to use and reliable so far. It's a bit slower than my Sky+ HD box but no slower than the Youview equivalent.
The operating screens (user interface) are the least attractive of the three competitors (Sky, Youview, Freeview Play) but not by much. Perhaps another upgrade will bring it into line as a full competitor, possibly even a leader in ease of use. It has an advantage over the Sky+ HD box, which it shares with the Youview box, and that's the ability to skip through adverts. you can also forward or reverse to a moment in time (as in 11:30 pm), which the Sky box cannot do.
So my message to Humax would be: 'great box, just a little further to go to make it outstanding'. Good value at the price I paid.

Faulty construction and lack of support spoils this cable
The quality is let down by the way the switch is mounted. It was not possible to switch modes because the switch was not glued to the case properly and came off on first use. The instructions are confusing and the cable is supplied with software but the support site says that they don't support the software. The cable does work on the BMW E85 but only after modification.
