Best Version of this Classic Yet
Greta Gerwig's adaptation of this well-loved and already much-filmed literary classic is in my opinion the most effective version so far, for it cleverly plays with time, allowing the viewer much greater insight into the various characters' journeys. It is uniformly well acted by a strong and committed ensemble cast, but special mention should go to Saiorse Ronan's passionate Jo - she seems to get better with each successive performance - and Laura Dern's Marmie, who allows us a unique insight into her own private grief, which has been singularly lacking in previous adaptations, where this role is frequently reduced to saccharine saintliness. Not so here. Laura Dern's strength enables you to see just how truly Jo is her mother's daughter. The film is further helped by the stunning, luminous cinematography, which contrasts the rural idyll of New England with the teeming, still semi-built New York, each acting as the appropriate backdrop for the narrative arc and structure of the whole.
