    santana; shaman
grand daddy of latino rock dispenses the high potency medicine for the soul to telling effect on this 2002 release. Carlos surrounds himself with a diverse group of guest vocalists to give this album a cool contempory feel and an eclectic appeal. dido, macy gray and michelle branch offer the feminine softness to counterbalance the usual latino machismo and ebulliance often associated with some of santana's work, though the real revelations, on this side of the atlantic at least, are the two notable contributions from citizen cope (sideways) and Alejandro lerner (hoy es adios). These contributors however fail to upstage the master completely as carlos comes good on "victory is won" a good old fashioned anthemic guitar tour de force, up there with previous classics such as "samba pa' ti", "song of the wind" and "flor de luna" but with 21st century guitar effects. "Aye aye aye" is another great santana salsa romp which will not disappoint fans of abraxas and will probably get some people unfamiliar with latin music and santana on the dancefloor. An album which will please santana's oldest fans and also those who have just discovered what a treasure the music of santana is - which is obviously what carlos had in mind when he went into the studio. Ideal for 40 something's party night in suburbia or on the car hifi motoring up the M1 to a sales conference, Carlos delivers big style and introduces his audience to some great new musicians - though in aiming for mass appeal the album occasionally stumbles in to a morass of trite and unneccessary commercialism on one or two tracks.

    A sound success
Bought one for myself to solve the problem of never hearing people knocking at the door and have since installed two others (different make and model) for neighbours who seem equally pleased. An effective and value for money solution which involve no specialist skills or complicated wiring to fit

    another fine compilation from Charly
Charly records have been indispensible for european based latin music fans throughout the 1990's when obtaining original music from south and central america was the realm of only the most dedicated enthusiast. Here once again Charly does the trick by unearthing obscure and rare cuts from latin artists at the peak of their careers in the 1960s, before they recieved exposure to the wider european and north american audiences. Here Celia Cruz is on fine form with La Sonora Matancena and Cortijo, Cheo Feliciano sings with Joe Cuba Sextette (excellent stuff), Joe Valle lays down an irresistible rhythm and another leading light of the '60s latin music scene Ismael Rivera doesn't hold back, giving a raw, hard driving and vibrant glimpse into the hispanic music scene of New York, pre-Fania. This is not schmaltzy latin lift music but rather a dancelicious delve into the diaspora from Puerto Rico and Cuba from many of the artists who went on to provde the blueprint for salsa music in the following decades. Turn up loud and be prepeared to move as this cd takes you on a whirlwind tour of some of the caribbean dances and rhythms that took latin music from the folkloric to the big city.
