DO NOT BUY THIS GAME USED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT BUY A USED COPY OF THIS GAME!!!!! I cannot say this loud or often enough, DON'T DO IT!!!!! You're wasting your money. The game requires a Steam account to activate (annoying in itself, but not a big deal). The problem occurs if you have a game and key code that has already been registered on Steam. You WILL NOT be able to activate your used copy of the game and play it and Steam WILL NOT reset the key code if they know you've bought a used game. They explicitly state they WILL NOT reset key codes for games bought on auction sites or from used software vendors. DON'T BUY THIS GAME USED unless you like the cover art or need some more CDs for your useless CD's collection. It WILL NOT WORK and Steam WILL NOT help you make it work.

Sometimes better to wait
This is why I wait to buy some PC games... later add-ons and packs usually sell for $20-$30 each, on top of the $50 new relase of the main game. With this, you can get all 3 games for essentially the price of the first one. If you bought the game and the add-ons when they were released, you'd have spent $90-$110 (retail) for all the games in this compilation. Of course you'd also have missed out on playing AOE3 for awhile. The downside... no fancy manuals or collector's edition specials that come with some releases. All you get are glossy fold-out tech trees for each game and a quick start guide. Bottom line... great value if you missed the intial release or got the basic game with an OEM purchase but never got the later add-ons.

Not one of the better games I've played
If you're expecting a space RTS along the lines of Sins of a Solar Empire or ST: Armada or SW: Empires at War, prepare to be sadly disappointed. This is not the space game you're looking for. While the planets look gorgeous, the ships and space stations are hardly anything to look at. Which would be forgiving if at least your ten classes of ships varied and if after arming them with different weapons they looked different, but they don't. The game has some innovative physics (space station motion, assigning fleets to orbit either the planet or the station as it orbits the plant) that can lead to some interesting planetary motion effects. While you can customize your ships, it's a rather bland and uninspiring process. The single-player mission, while somewhat interesting, was like a tired space opera with even worse presentation (bigger, badder, more numerous aliens take over your space empire, you fight to stay alive and eventually rebuild your space empire all the while looking for a lost loved one caught behind enemy lines). The story is told through your 'interactive' - though completely linear and without choice - RPG-like responses to superiors, comrades and your own ship's AI but most are long, drawn out, and completely unnecessary (not to mention you can't skip through or speed them up). I didn't get very far through the campaign mission before I lost interest. The in-game physics engine had potential to make things interesting. The rest of the game completed killed the redeeming qualities of that potential. Not one of the worst game I've played, but I wouldn't recommend it either unless you just want to spend a few evenings playing with fleets orbiting planets and space stations. This game just doesn't have a fun-factor associated with it.
