Hammer Created Genius!
This has long been one of my favourite Hammer Frankenstein films and I'm in good company. No less a director than Martin Scorsese put it in his top ten films of all time. More of an adult fairy tale than an all-out horror movie, it is beautifully filmed and acted by Peter Cushing, Susan Denberg and a totally adorable Thorley Walters And it has never looked better than on this Shout Factory Blu Ray. Not only that but it is crammed with special features. I literally cannot recommend this movie enough.

Halloween II DVD
After the massive success of 'Halloween', director John Carpenter was asked to do a sequel. He and his partner banged out a script, picking up the story of indestructible nutjob Michael Myers' single-minded pursuit of Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode, but he declined to direct, handing over the reins to chum Rick Rosenthal. The gore content was upped as was the body count, and the film was put together in a very 'Carpenter-esque' way.
This DVD is a pretty good widescreen transfer, miles ahead of the grainy full-frame version on the market from Prism, but what really makes this special is the fantastically entertaining and informative commentary by horror experts Kim Newman and Stephen Jones. I hadn't realised that Carpenter had been persuaded to come in and direct a few of the more gory sequences as the producers had felt that Rosenthal hadn't given it enough 'oomph' but these two point out where the joins are, so to speak, as well as providing lots of choice info.
The film itself is okay if you can get past the hideous reworking of the theme tune, and poor old Curtis has little to do except loiter around in a hospital bed looking sedated until mad Michael comes a-calling and starts polishing off all of the staff in the peculiarly under-manned Haddonfield General Hospital. Donald Pleasence is back as Dr Sam Loomis and he's good value as usual, seeming almost as barmy as the Shatner-masked serial killer.
So, not as good as the ground-breaking original but streets ahead of all of the increasingly desperate sequels.
