STRAY CATS - STRAY CATS. DEBUT ALBUM
This is the first album by the, i suppose, legendary American rockabilly band.I remember when the band first appeared on Top Of The Pops in 1980 with their debut single Runaway Boys and, wow, what an impact it had on my 13 year old brain! Having missed Punk, not getting the flouncy New Romantics and all the other (successfull) Rock n' Roll inspired bands were cabaret acts like Showaddywaddy, these lot looked and sounded COOL!! Tattoo's,leather, exaggerated quiffs, one of which was bleached blonde, these lot had it! Runaway Boys, the opening track on the album, has a driving double bass line that still gets hummed by people over 25 years later. The next 3 tracks rock and stomp ther way past and then a change in tempo and style with Storm The Embassy. This track seems to be more punk inspired, like Crawl Up And Die, but with politcal lyrics and mentions of the Iranian Embassy siege in London. Then, Rock This Town, the second single, which i think is even better than the first.Great guitar intro into really rockin bass and drums, the album version being longer than the 7", so even better! Rumble In Brighton, about the seaside fight's that used to occur in England between Mods, Rockers and Skinheads, on bank holiday weekends, is next and then followed by Stray Cat Strut, which is the 3rd single, slower than the first 2 and probably their most used on TV. 4 more tracks follow, Crawl Up And Die being the only non Rockabilly sounding one, with the final track being Wild Saxaphone, featuring session saxophonist Gary Barnacle, who seems to appear on every record i own that needs the sax! this album still stands up today, and because they were one of the pioneering bands to use Punk fused with really rockin' Rockabilly, i don't think it sounds dated. When they reformed and toured the UK in 2004 they sold out everywhere with no radio and minimal advertising, so i know i'm not alone. A great introduction to a great band. As a side note, i got into a lot of trouble at school for bleaching my hair a couple fof weeks after Top Of The Pops! Anyhow, get this album and enjoy.
