It shows Cromwell as a ruthless, self- promoting and vindictive individual. It is interesting, challenging and critical in its review of his rise to power as the leader of the New Model Army. It charts his rise to power from a lowly provincial squire to become one of the leaders of the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War and a remarkable politician and military leader. It shows him to have been a man of genuine religious faith, but also a vindictive, sly, self-publicizing and dishonest leader with a brooding temperament. Gripping, scholarly, with a detailed up to date research and a challenging and waspish approach to the subject. Very interesting and gives a new perspective on Cromwell, especially his part in the Civil War battles and campaigns.
