A beautifully made pocket watch
1 of 1 found this helpful A beautifully made pocket watch, where you can see the action of the mechanism from the rear and the back. It comes with a nice fob chain and clip which is about 250mm long. The watch itself is round and about 45mm diameter. The latch mechanism is simple and flicks the front cover of the watch open with ease.
You can see the quality of the internal workings, including the gemstone bearing for the pendulum. It even has an accurate second hand. Of course, mechanical watches are no frills, having no stop watch or alarm or calendar, compared to a quartz digital.
But, there are no batteries to replace and the winder gives a generous 24-36 hours use before needing to rewind.
Don't expect quartz precision, it keeps time relatively well but it does loose the odd minute over 24 hours.The watch is easy to set with a pull up section of the winder.
At first, I wasn't sure which way the winder was supposed to go as there is some sort of ratchet, should you wind it the wrong way. It winds clockwise to tension the spring. As with all mechanical devices, it is not advisable to over-tension the spring, but there is a good responsive feel on the winder which tightens up as you get close to the full tension. You'd have to try hard to break the spring.
A few niggles with the watch are that it has a plastic face, not a glass face, which means it is more susceptible to being scratched. My infant son bit it and the teeth marks are still there. But with normal use, and with the raised cover latched, the face shouldn't get scratched.
The other thing is the Roman numeral for 4 on the dial is IIII not IV, which looks a little odd for someone who knows Roman numerals.
Overall, I am very pleased with the watch, which I have owned for over a month. I intend to use it in my machine shop as I have trouble with wrist watches staying together (and with safety) with the machinery I use, and that my wrists swell in the heat making wrist watches uncomfortable. I was looking for a long lasting, reliable watch with no batteries to replace.

Drop in replacement RTC for Computer PCB's
The DS12887 is a drop in replacement for real time clocks on many older pentium and other PC boards. In my case, I needed it to replace a depleted RTC on a Tektronix TLA711 logic analyser.
While the operation of desoldering and removing the existing DS12887 from the circuit board is fairly difficult (especially while trying to not damage the pcb tracks), once the original one is removed, it is straight forward to solder this 28 pin IC in place.
The battery on the DS12887 should last at least 10 years. This means that replacing the RTC should last the remaining life of the instrument/computer.
