corny but gorgeous
I wanted to see this movie after being reminded of it by some clips of the dancing on YouTube. I hadn’t seen it since its theatrical release in the late 70s. It was nowhere to be found in any streaming version, so I sprang for the DVD, and it was worth it.
On the negative side, it’s a pretty predictable script, with uninspired dialogue, a silly climactic fight and a too-tidy resolution. And the dancers are all pretty bad actors, except for the marvelous Danilova.
However, there is real truth about life choices at the core of the story. Some of the lead performances are outstanding, especially Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft, who rise above the cliches of the script and dialogue and communicate real depth and feeling wordlessly.
And the dancing is out of this world: nothing compares to Barishnikov in his gorgeous prime. I would have preferred a more conventional viewpoint of the state to the strange into-the-lights camera angles which, after the inital novelty, start to interfere with appreciating the dance. But what’s there is still amazing, and the glimpses of rehearsals are even better.
