a film i first saw many years ago i was reminded of it by a friends trip to Auschwitz and having seen Schindlers List, The Pianist, The Grey Zone and others decided to look it up again and pleased to see it available on DVD.
starring Willem Defoe as a Jewish Boxer from Greece, he is transported to Auschwitz with his family and then made to fight for his survival in boxing matches, arranged for the pleasure of the Nazi guards. If he wins - he lives; and condems the other fighter to death.
Actually this idea behind the film is rarely covered there aren't that many fights in the film , but as with all Holocaust films the conditions of the camp and brutality meted out by the guards takes the larger of the films time.
Overall a very good film, not as depraving as Schindler or as lifting as the Pianist, but a suitable memorial indeed - based on the true story of Salamo Arouch.
