    depth with sensitivity
An excellent mood-concept album, great with a late night malt whisky in front of the fire. I only discovered it as the theme tune and background music to 'Rogue Male' read on BBC Radio four-extra by Michael Jayston

A Reasonable Overview of American Popular Music
I bought this CD because the tracklist shared some of the titles with that of the OST of "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", one of my favourite films. This compilation, however, stretches beyond that of the OST, great though that is. This CD (there are two) has 30 tracks, from bluegrass and old time country, through folk and blues, to the one and only Emmylou Harris. A reasonable overview of American popular music, without the pop / rock or metal etc., useful as an introduction to each genre which could broaden the listener's musical taste. Try it, you really should find something here you like.

    Best Guide for European Birds
Without doubt, the best guide around today to help identify all European birds, at all times of year, at different ages and even slight localised differences are illustrated. A Must for any birder, whether expert, beginner or somewhere between. However, be aware of what you are buying. This is too big for most pockets though could be used as a field guide if carried in a backpack etc. and at almost 450 pages even the paperback is quite heavy. The detail is superb and the range of birds covered(both by type and by geography)is enormous,.e.g. (type)there are 78 waders described and (geography) the whole of Europe + the countries bordering the Med to the east and to the south. While this book would be indispensible when birdwatching in Europe, I prefer to use the RSPB Handbook of British Birds (Holden & Cleeves)for use on home territory because the latter, by definition, concentrates on those birds likely to be encountered in the UK, e.g.there are 34 waders described (cf 78 above)and it illustrates 1 bird per page as opposed to the Collins 4 or 5 per page. The RSPB book is correspondingly lighter though slightly taller. So, buy the Collins book, every birder should have a copy, but get the lastest 2nd edition with updated distribution maps, and buy the RSPB book too, again the latest edition, which is the 3rd.
