HOME THEATER SURGE PROTECTOR MONSTER POWER HTS-2500MKII REFERENCE POWERCENTER
    04 Feb, 2016
Nice way to clean up your power cables
Looking past the hype about how much magic this unit performs on your AC power it is basically a well made, nice looking unit that provides 10 AC outlets for your A/V setup including switched outlets controlled by a 12V trigger - something of a rarity these days. There are several different versions of the HTS-2500 floating around but I think this one, with seven LEDs on the front (3 green, 1 blue, 3 red) is the pick of the bunch. There is one design flaw though. The main board that controls the switched outlets is powered by a very simple linear power supply with a center-tap transformer and a couple of 1N4148 signal diodes to rectify the output of the transformer. They are hopelessly underpowered for this task and will eventually cook themselves, leading to all the switched outlets shutting down and the red lights flickering off. Fortunately it's pretty easy to just replace them with something bigger, 1N4004s would be a good choice. For the current selling price it's a bargain, especially when you consider that just a 12V trigger switch such as a Niles AC-3 costs around $100 for one unswitched and two switched outlets, and doesn't look nearly as nice in your rack.

    Disappointing successor to S7000
The S7700 is a decent DVD player for a 12 year old model but it will always live in the shadow of the earlier S7000 which is in an altogether different league. It also has the dreaded chroma bug which causes pink/green flickering on the component outputs but is not visible if you use S-Video. Unlike the S7000 which is packed with audio boards and power supplies (pretty much the entire audio circuitry from the now famous CDP-XA7ES), the S7700 is mostly air inside the box. Having owned both I have always regretted selling the S7000, not realizing that its immediate successor would be so drastically downgraded. Eventually I bought another S7000 and the S7700 sits collecting dust in a box somewhere. Sony went all out to make their first release DVD player memorable and it's audio magic in particular has to be heard to be believed.
