Various Artists - The Goth Anthology (CD 2006) 3 CD SET
1 of 1 found this helpful OK first up this set gets top rating because I picked it up for £3.99! Yeah it covers the 80's Goth scene very very well, with informative, if limited, booklet/sleevenotes with CD1. However had this been a full price set it would have lost marks for not including The Banshees,The Cure or (forgive me Psychobillies of the world) The Cramps. BUT (and this is why it scores so highly) You get 38 Gothic Dancefloor Anthems, Classics and Rarities, just how any "Various Artists" reissue set should be. There are 40 tracks so myself and my wife both "Black Balled" one each as we were both into the scene at the time, although I was more of a Psychobilly. My wife threw out Sigue Sigue sputnik (although I can see its merit as the chart manifestation of the then burgeoning Cyber-Goth scene!!! And I poo-pooed The Psychedelic furs who have, in my opinion as much Goth credential as A-HA. Spikey hair and a drone doth not gain auto-entry to Gothdom!!! I suppose because of licensing there's also no Nick Cave/Birthday Party, (Southern Death) Cult, Theatre Of Hate/Spear Of Destiny or Ubergoths BAUHAUS although most of the musical omissions get a mention in the notes. BUT (and its a biggie) YOU DO GET plenty of BATCAVE era goffickery via Alien Sex Fiend, Specimen, Bone Orchard and my personal faves Sunglasses After Dark... Theres the next wave who became Indie Chart fillers (and eventually onto TOTP! too) Sisters of Mercy, March Violets, Fields of Nephilim, The Mission and then onto various branches of this enchanted genre CYBER GOTH - INDUSTRIAL -US DARK WAVE -GOTHIC METAL and even some influential artists like NICO, The Damned and early Adam and The Ants.....
To sum up this box set is the most cost effective way to get all these tracks BAR NONE, sure you could download each one from some dodgy program your mate heard about at work, but half your MP3s will be kaput, yer PC will have terminal lurgy and the nice man from the RIAA will bust yer shiny black PVC butt...

Oxford 4mm to a foot (1/76 & OO scale) Carlight Continental Caravan.
I've owned a few vintage Coachbuilt caravans and I collect 4mm Scale Showman's models so I was excited when the first drawings of this "trailer" appeared in the modelling press and on the Oxford website. Its an absolute cracker of a model. I have not measured dimensions yet but I have lots of other 4mm caravans from white metal kits, diecasts and scratch built by myself and it looks spot on. Compared to Oxfords previous caravan it is simply outstanding. I paid just under a tenner, there is cheaper available if your prepared to wait.
This wee gem will add to , and even dare I say grace ANY model railway layout of any period post 1970s (possibly 1960s) and/or any Fairground or Circus layout or diorama as it is without any need for additions, paint touch ups or the dreaded dremel cutter. Having said that if Oxford (or Atlas) do not release one in Carters colours they will have missed a trick. Charlie Corroli also travelled in a similar shaped van for several years,in bright yellow and red. One small addition for a showmans trailer would be essential wood burner stack, often coming out of what was the toilet window, because any traveller will tell you that running water in a home on wheels is bad luck!!! Not to mention a lavatory in your bedroom...
Well done Oxford for finally giving us a scale Caravan we can be proud of. I'm just waiting for the Bachmann Sprite Musketeer now although that will be twice the price and looks to have blacked out windows in the pre-production pictures. My last home on wheels a couple of years back was a Musketeer though so I will have to buy one. :O)

Extreme for computing for least outlay.
I've been running a 2nd user FX-6300 for 7 months now and the first thing to know about these is forget air cooling. Water cooling is so cheap these days and thanks to the multitude of "All In One" systems its as easy as fitting an air cooler if not easier because you dont have a huge lump of ally and copper to fit in along with ever more extreme fans. You do need a case that accommodates 12cm fans but that is most these days. I run mine with 2x12cm sized Corsair rad with fans either side but I chose to butcher a Thermaltake case to make that all fit on top rather than undo a factory sealed system to use the holes in the case, it was only a tenner though so I didnt mind and I will sell it as a system when I upgrade (not for ages I love this machine).
I idle at 11c. Brousing with SEVENTY tabs open now I'm at 16c. I use 8g of mushkin ram. Used to run 16 but I noticed no difference at 8 with less power used. I inherited my sons HD7950 graphics card (aka R9-280X) when he got upgraded so I have very fast machine for little cash. My 2nd hand FX6300 was around £68 inc postage.
I use my PC for processing music files (Mixed In Key, Platinum Notes, Tagscanner) , watching HD movies, listening to music (Foobar), browsing and occasionally as a Digital Audio Workstation and it excels at whatever I throw at it. My motherboard, an Asrock 880g extreme runs my CPU in turbo mode at 4.1ghz. AOD got to 6ghz before I bottled it, but to be honest I run it mostly at stock 3.6 purely for longevity. For less than £70 (£50 recently if you stay up very very late) for 2nd hand prices you can have computing power which could cost you a LOT more.
Finally a word on the Bulldozer, or this CPU type, it has got bad press here and there for compatibility issues my advice is check your motherboards web page THEN the overclockers forums about your too. As a rule you need a BLACK PLASTIC CPU socket which is the AM3+ but there are reports of some not working. Both mine and my sons CPU/Mobo ( He runs FX-8150 + AsRock 970 Extreme 3) required the BETA BIOS download which ends your warranty. However theres LOTS of people using them successfully and If like me you buy 2nd user or shop returns to save spondoolicks its a moot point. Theres instances of people on forums getting 6 core and 8 core FX cpus working with motherboards that dont officially support them, so research research research!!!
Good luck and enjoy building and using your new baby.
