An Epic Masterpiece in Modern Rap, Breaking the Mold...
This album is incrediable. Period. I have heard all of Del the Funkee Homosapian, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala's other music and I must say that this album represents them at the pinicle of their carriers. Whether it be the intelligent and highly complex rhymes and lyrics of Del, or the cinematic soundscapes produced by Dan the Automator, this album is must-listen from start to finish. The originality of the sampling of the beats and the lyrics makes this an album that is near impossible to match. It starts out with the intro which simply establishes the fact that the album is to take place in the year 3030. Next track, 3030, follows up with some of the most impressive sampling and beat creation out of any hip-hop album I have ever heard. It cues in the listener that they are about to hear a story about two space travelers in the future. The way the melody flows and builds creates a landscape within your mind depicting the year 3030, just as the artists intended to do so. Simply put, the sampling and instrumental production job by Dan the Automator is incredible. Plain incredible. Luckly enough Del is right on Dan the Automator's level to complete the sound with dynamic, unique, lyrics and rhyme schemes that are so complex and catchy that you will find them repeating in your head at random times later in the day. To give an example, here is a line from the song, "Things you can do": "Runnin' 'em up with technology with no apology, shoutin' out to my colony with 3rd Eye Physiology" and "Then I flip the bio-techs, right into the wireless, your 3rd EYE is hit with psoriasis"... That's right, as an amazon.com reviewer pointed out: he just used the word "psoriasis" in a rap. Thankfully this trend is not isolated and continues throughout the whole album. I'm sure many words Del rhymes with are ones that many mainstream rappers have never even heard of in their lives. All of the tracks are amazing, but since it is so original it takes a little bit of time for the listener to "break in" to the style of this album. Don't get me wrong, the listener will like it in the first sitting, but its just like a fine wine that gets better over time. I find that with all albums that become favorites, there is a similar "break in" period; so with that said, I would consider it a good thing. If I had to choose a few standout tracks from the album I would nominate: 3030, Positive Contact, Virus, Mastermind, Madness, and Turbulance. It is really a shame that this album is out of print as I would consider this to be one of, if not the best hip-hop album of all time. It shows an intelligent, dynamic, "out-of-the-box" side of rap that sadly enough seems to be lacking from mainstream music. Some reviewers give albums that they like labels such as "best album of all time" often. I do not, I am very stringent about my musical tastes. This album is really that good. I would place it in the top 10 of all albums of any music genere. I heard this album for the first time six years ago. I have been listening to it for the last six years and I am still not tired of it. I would recommend it to any fan of intelligent rap, or just plain good music. You will not be disappointed with Deltron 3030, it lives up to the defination of a musical masterpiece.
